Once the blueberries are ready, we're open every day from 7am-sunset, until we run out of fruit. Call us @ 601-796-9788 if you have specific questions about ripening blueberries or field conditions.
For folks with children, the elderly or those who have health concerns, it's cooler to pick during the early morning hours (until 10:30am) or late afternoons (after 4pm). (After 6pm, it is incredibly lovely!) If you're an early morning picker, remember to bring your boots because usually the field is pretty wet from the dew.
Remember to wear a hat and sunscreen when picking because the same sun that makes a blueberry dark, sweet and delicious can do serious damage to your skin. Some folks like to wear long-sleeved, light-colored, cotton overshirts for extra protection from the sun. The sun gets very intense, and we don't want you to get sunburned or overheated. If you do get hot, we have shade trees to sprawl under, and you can always come to the house to sit in the air conditioning and cool down for a while.
We'll have cool water for you to drink, but if you need something special, remember to pack it. We also have picnic tables in and around the field where you can eat your lunch and enjoy Mother Nature.
Our blueberries are on a hill where the Mississippi breezes sweep pesky mosquitoes away. We don't usually have a mosquito problem...but sometimes we have a few. So if you use bug spray, pack that too.
If you have allergies, please bring your medications: Are you allergic to bees? Wasps? Caterpillers? Here on the farm, we have many insects that pollinate or help us in many ways. They don't bother most folks and are part of the sustainability of PRB. Unfortunately, some of them bite and sting. If you are allergic to insects or nature, please pack your EPI-pins and medications.
We do have ants. Red ants! Since we're organic, we don’t nuke them with chemicals. Red ants actually aerate the soil and eat many bad insects. We just pick around them. So, you need to wear shoes and watch where you step.
PRB is a working farm. We try very hard to create a park-like atmosphere, but we also have holes from burrowing animals and brambles and stickers. Sorry. Watch where you walk!
Dogs. We love dogs! Pets are welcome as long as they are leashed and under your control, especially around our chickens and other u-pick customers. We have farm dogs, cats and raise chickens here as our livestock as well as our pets.
If you have special picking needs, let us know so we can do what’s possible to help. We’ll see you in the field!
